OUTREACH
Presentation to School
Our hope is to expand our team influence and fill the void of our previously graduated seniors. We presented to various demographics; races, genders, grade, and skill level. From this outreach, we helped impact to enlist 7 new members across the Albemarle robotics program. This year, we have five new members, one freshman and four sophomores, introduced to FIRST robotics through prior FLL experience, a recommendation from their teachers, or outreach events.
Girl Coders
Nerds of the North volunteered for Girl Coders. Girl Coders is a national nonprofit organization to educate and enable female K-12 students in computer science. We make computer science not just about binary, but about connecting code to community outreach and their passions, such as art, websites, or even hardware coding! One of their curriculums (Wordpress) had over 100 requests nationwide.

Junior League of Charlottesville
The Junior League of Charlottesville is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable. Nerds of the North applied for a grant from Junior League of Charlottesville to further our team influence and raise community involvement with our team.
E-STEAM Girl Summit
On September 14th, the Nerds of the North volunteered at the E-STEAM Girl’s Summit to help out on anything needed. While we were there, we worked alongside members of another team from our high school to teach younger girls about robotics and programming using Sphero robots. We set up an obstacle course and then helped the girls work individually or in groups to create a program that would allow the robots to traverse the obstacle course. Most of the girls were able to complete the course, and it was wonderful to see their excitement once they began to get the hang of the programming.
